Major and Vigil

Vigil Comes Through with Win

Left: Junior Ashley Vigil (Albuquerque, NM): Right: Junior Audra Major (Socorro, NM)

Down by seven with just three minutes remaining, the WNMU women's basketball put the pressure on Grand Canyon University and cut the lead to just one with :54 second remaining, but the WNMU scoring didn't end there. It was junior Ashley Vigil (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia High School)'s effort in the final two minutes that gave WNMU the edge. Two Vigil free throws put the Mustangs up by one with :28 second remaining, but the Lopes' Rosalyn Nelson ran the length of the floor for an easy layup 11 seconds later to give the Lopes the one-point advantage. Vigil then drove the length of the floor herself and made a tough shot from the right side to end the scoring, 75-74. This is the women's basketball's first victory of the season.

The Mustangs had an early lead, 11-2, in the first seven minutes of play, but two straight three-pointers by GCU's Stacy Haddow cut the lead to only three. The Mustangs then went on another 10-1 run over a two minute period to go up by double-digits. WNMU held that 11 point lead through halftime thanks to solid rebounding and power scoring by junior Audra Major (Socorro, NM/Socorro High School) (Socorro, NM). Major finished with her first double-double of the season with 18 rebounds and 25 points. Twelve of those rebounds and 17 points came in the first half.

GCU came out of the locker room on fire to come to take the lead by six, 47-41, in just under six minutes of play, but the Mustangs didn't back down. Free throws down the backstretch kept the Mustangs within reach. WNMU went 11-for-13 from the charity strip in the second half. Five of the final six free throws were in the closing two minutes to get the win.

Senior Brandy Harris (Goodyear, AZ) finished with 20 points after hitting 8-of-11 from the floor. Vigil finished with eight points and five assist.

Overall, WNMU shot 45.2 percent from the field, and GCU finished with 41.0 percent.
